In other news, Mastodon-the-band keep talking about my project and I don't know how to process this, it's just too amazing https://twitter.com/mastodonmusic/status/849424628401541121 Damn, if they decided to start an instance... What would they even be called. So many instances are already called mastodon XD
Today has been one hell of a day! I have been working on both devops and code optimization non-stop, as well as answering questions and e-mails. A lot of ms have been shaved off of requests and background jobs. Instance admins should probably update to the latest master. I'll be looking into adopting a more stable release system than just the master branch.
Oh also, I did read that "Mastodon will go extinct" article. The author doesn't get it, and didn't reach out to me at all.
I really wish I signed up with another instance now. Mastodon.social is really feeling the weight of this surge in users, my home feed has a few hours lag to it before Toots actually show up.
Maybe in the future they'll allow account migration from one instance to another, or linking accounts across multiple instances.
Tip of the day:
You can bridge with Twitter so others can find you, and you can find them:
If you have the URL for a toot on another instance you can add it to the search bar on your home instance (above the compose field) to get your local interactions (boost, reply etc.)
I wrote a little Mastodon 101 yesterday.
If you are hosting a server/community and want me to blurb it in the post send me a message, with the blurb!
May look at setting up a local instance of Mastodon, a Cardiff centric one. The joy of the federated platform is this is possible and give users a local trusted network they can interact with comfortably. So many ideas and thoughts around this. Really wish I'd stuck with GNUsocial when tried it out a year ago or so.
I am not reading comments on Hacker News because I pretty much remember all the various sentiments from my first "Show HN", and I do not have the energy to also answer questions there
But as others have pointed out, these are all nice problems to have. I am so happy that people are finally using my work at large. <3
Current feelings on Mastodon / the fediverse after a few days of almost constant usage:
- Following @rms is a new, fascinating experience.
- Loving the amount of toots and people who are talking. Way better than birdsite ever was from my perspective.
- Lack of brands and rt'ing bots is :ok_hand:
- Not going to lie, having a higher follower count than on the birdsite feels good. I'm horribly narcissistic like that.
Great chrome extension that adds a too button around the web, where a tweet button would be. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tooter/okmlpjijminjkikninbkcnfmhkofgnnk/related
Mostly French instance - Read full description for rules.
